Mari Simmulson for Upsala Ekeby Pair of 1960 Agave Series Incised Leaf Polychrome Glaze Jug Vases

These striking works of Swedish Mid Century Modern design are by Mari Simmulson (b. 1911- d. 2000) for Upsala Ekeby. Simmulson was a celebrated Swedish ceramics designer and ceramicist, known for many series she designed at Upsala Ekeby which went on to become classics. This hand-thrown and hand-glazed work comes from Simmulson's Agave series, designed around 1960.

The series is characterised by the delightfully vivid leaves that are deeply incised broad strokes into the surface and gloss-glazed in hues of Sunbeam yellow and Bold teal. The silky leaves are offset against the fine-lined matte glazed backdrop in Mocha brown. The juxtaposition of glazes and textures gives these pieces a very touchable, tactile quality.

The combination of the form, decor and colour palette brings a joyful and lively vibe that makes these pieces suitable for standalone display or functionally as bud vases or candleholders.

The underside of each vase's base is inscribed with Upsala Ekebys 'Ekeby' and Simmulson's 'ms' monogram as well as the model number '4443'.
